Buy to Let Property in Camden Town, London NW1
Camden High Street marks the centre of this district which is home to the bustling weekend market for which the area is best known. The street itself is lined with trendy shops, bars and restaurants whilst the courtyards and warehouses around Camden Lock, where the High Street bridges the 19th century Regent's Canal, are home to thousands of market stalls, shops and fashionable enterprises from all corners of the World.
There is a prevalent bohemian ambience to the area with the back streets being quieter and more reserved. Regent's Park and Primrose Hill are both nearby.
History of Camden
Like plenty of other London districts, Camden was rolling countryside until the end of the 17th century. Before that neighbouring Primrose Hill had been a popular hunting ground before Elizabeth the First ordered its transformation into primrose filled meadowland.
The early 19th century saw Camden start to develop into more of a town. Mornington Crescent appeared in 1821 and there were quite a few houses along what is now Camden High Street. The building of the Regents Canal in the late 1820s kick-started wholesale development in Camden however, and combined with the industrial impact of the railways ensured Camden's rapid growth.
All this development naturally led to a downturn in the area's popularity with the wealthy classes. Tenements, factories and workhouses didn't do much to increase its appeal. By the beginning of the 20th century, however, things started to improve. Camden became popular with writers, artists and musicians - a trend which has carried on to today. Dylan Thomas lived in the area in the 1930s, and spent most of his time boozing, in between bouts of furtive scribbling…
In the latter part of the 20th century, Camden became more and more scruffy, although this trend seems to have been reversed somewhat - probably as a result of new money entering the area for the first time.
